Underestimating the complexity of the application process
School research, post-MBA jobs, work visa requirements, and alumni reach out, each task is critical to success yet takes a lot of time. Applying for an MBA is much more complicated than just studying for the GMAT, looking at school rankings, and writing an essay.
Unable to manage time and total MBA project
Many candidates do not know that the average MBA application takes more than 500 hours – more than 300 hours of GMAT study and more than 200 hours of application, which typically lasts a full year. Most start late, invest too much in studying for the GMAT (up until the application deadline), and invest too little in essay writing and other important components. When they start writing their essay with only 3 months left, it’s already too late.
Lack of career clarity
Many people want to start a business, do consulting or join Tech companies in the US, but do not have enough past experience. That’s an unrealistic career goal. Others try to force an artificial goal to easily get an offer or MBA scholarship. Both extremes are early signs of failure.
Addicted to rankings

With GMAT 670 and being the youngest member of the INSEAD class enrolling in INSEAD in 2023, Nguyen is the main character of a modern fairy tale.
Two months before we met, Nguyen tried everything: talking to alumni, buying MBA essay writing guides, and hiring an American admission consultant. Nothing really worked, and she had a hard time with the deadline only 5 weeks away.
When we first met, we immediately knew the main issue: her career vision. As a Brand Manager in CPG, she wanted to set up a marketing consulting company for small and medium enterprises in Vietnam. From an admissions perspective, this vision is unrealistic because she (1) has never worked with small and medium-sized enterprises, (2) has never started a company, and (3) has never worked with small and medium enterprises. After many sessions, we aligned a new career goal with our B2C marketing experience, which was the beginning of everything. Later, Nguyen shared that guiding her career vision was the most powerful change.
We spent many nights talking about childhood and fragmented memories. We arranged them into an overarching story that connected the past with the present and the future, connecting marketing and leadership. More often than not, we expressed something back to Nguyen in better language; she breathed a sigh of relief and joy as if she had found gold.
A "happy ending" happened when the admissions committees from all three top MBA schools saw something special in Nguyen beyond the GMAT scores. The hardest school, INSEAD, offers the highest scholarship at 45,000 Euros.

Many thought GMAT 760 earners shouldn't worry about not getting top offers and scholarships. But that's only half the truth. Hao could have applied and entered his dream school without help but chose not to.
Even if you are a star at work, you still have difficulty achieving your career goals. After his MBA, Hao initially aimed to go from a CPG Brand Manager to a Tech Product Manager in the US. This goal simultaneously changes three career aspects – expertise, industry and geography – and will likely cause early failure due to lack of practicality. After much consideration, we arrived at a passionate and realistic goal that served as a compass for the rest of his application.
Hao shared that while he was free to daydream, we helped him structure and focus on the essay prompts in the most strategic way. The essay "25 Random Facts" by Duke Fuqua is our favourite essay because of its originality in interestingly telling 25 random facts but smartly reflecting individuality.

Derek Dam

Position Senior Associate - BCG

Admissions: INSEAD.
Derek is one of the best talents at BCG, a former Uber employee, studied Undergraduate and Masters in Finance in the US, and has a GMAT score of 760. He has all the ingredients to get a top MBA offer, but two things seem to hold him back…
Derek confessed that he's not particularly passionate about any particular career path, so the story looks fragmented. The first few days of work were actually career coaching sessions. We listened to Derek's story and helped him describe his strengths, personality, and direction. In the end, Derek found the most suitable path and described it vividly in his application.
Another difficulty for Derek was his essay's lack of emotion and reflection. Derek's essays were just cold facts: trends, market potential, and business results. There were little emotions of joy, disappointment or confusion. As a logical person, Derek confessed that this was his weakness. We guided him in combining events, feelings, and thoughts in his writing. Admissions committees may not understand every profession or every country, but they know love, struggle, determination, sacrifice and empathy. Essay by essay, Derek wrote with increasing ease and confidently turned those techniques into engaging interviews.
Derek advanced to interviews with some of the most competitive MBA schools. He ultimately chose INSEAD as his final MBA destination.
